North Shore is a real cult classic, a movie that you might have never heard of (unless obscure 80s films are what you normally seek out), with a little known cast (especially if you're unfamiliar with obscure 80s movie or 80s pro surfers), but that turns out to be surprisingly popular among a particular group of fans.

Adler leaves the wave machines of Arizona for the real big ones of Oahu. And I've never ever seen better rides on film. I loved surfing as a kid, and still do, and I grew up in Arizona so I'd say I connected with this movie quite well. Cue Rick getting kicked out of a bar and cruising with the infamous Occy, arrives at his surf idol Lance Burkhart’s beach house (played by no other than big wave hellman Laird Hamilton), ruins local Da Hui leader Vince’s wave (played by a young Gerry Lopez) and gets his stuff stolen, bumps into the infamous Turtle (purveyor of some of the movie’s best one-liners), who introduces him to Chandler (surf guru, mentor to be, & soul surfer messiah). But today we still get packed audiences for screenings with people dressed as the characters.

North Shore Movie Trivia. (Some of the locals are very rude and extremely territorial over certain areas of Hawaii). Yes, the love storyline is cheesy, the one-liners are just stunning, but that is exactly what makes the movie all the better and everyone who watches it takes a one-liner or two with them to the beach. In other words, a timeless piece of surf and cinema nostalgia. The movie popularly known as “North Shore” quickly became an overnight cult classic amongst the surfing masses. I even think there's a Journey song at the end. Matt Adler loves to surf in the local wave machine pools. I grew up in HI and we really did use the stuff!

Matt Alder, Gregory Harrison, and John Philbin actually did their own surfing while the pro surfers were used as stunt doubles for the more difficult manoeuvres. All the actors are pleasant enough to watch, from Matt Adler (earnest and likeable) to Nia Peebles (foxy) to Gregory Harrison (Yoda-ish).
